Of course there are several work-around methods that you can use such as PLEX or Tonky. But we want an easy way – one standard be it DNLA or Miracast – that allows you to stream your content between devices no matter the platform. Well, one of the developers for ClockworkMod, Koushik Dutta, has released a final version of an app for Android called AllCast that allows streaming to Apple TV, Roku, Xbox, Smart TVs and other DLNA capable devices.
Using AllCast for Android
First download AllCast to your Android tablet or phone. It’s a free app and the free version has a one minute viewing limit on picture and video. This gives you the chance to use it and test it out. Then to remove the limit, you need to upgrade to the premium version, which at the time of this writing is $4.99. Make sure the device you want to stream to is up and running, and launch AllCast. Then give is a moment while it finds everything that’s compatible. In my example here it shows my Xbox 360, Roku, Pioneer AV receiver, and Apple TV.
After selecting the playback device, you can play whatever media you have on your phone or tablet.
What makes AllCast an easier solution compared to something like Twonky or PLEX, is you don’t need to install a client app on the playback device too. You just simply download AllCast on your smartphone or tablet. Then chances are, there’s a compatible living room playback device. One interesting thing to note is the app currently doesn’t support Google’s Chromecast, but the feature should be coming in a future update.
